Much of Turkey is visited by tourists and the population has become accustomed to the casual way that many Westerners dress. Despite this, there are still certain situations where it is advisable to dress in accordance with Islamic beliefs. When visiting mosques or holy sites, it is prudent to dress modestly and wear nothing that is too revealing. Also when entering a mosque, always take off your shoes. Local Customs Some body language will sometimes offend people in Turkey, for example; pointing at people is considered highly rude; also do not show the soles of your feet or shoes, so that people can see them and avoid blowing your nose in public, especially in restaurants. Public displays of affection between sexes e.g. kissing, hugging and holding hands are frowned upon. |
